Silicon Motion SM8008: PCIe 5.0 Boot Drive Hits 14GB/s Under 5W

Release date:2026-03-17 Number of clicks:170

On March 12, Silicon Motion launched the SM8008 controller chip—a PCIe Gen5 solution engineered specifically for data center boot drives and low-power enterprise storage, redefining the "secondary" role of boot drives with extreme efficiency.

Core Specs: Performance Meets Efficiency
Built on TSMC 6nm process with an 8-channel NAND architecture supporting ONFi/Toggle DDR 5.0 up to 3600 MT/s. Single-channel DDR4-3200 or LPDDR4-3200 with Inline ECC reduces power and BOM costs. Available in M.2, U.2, E1.S, and E3.S form factors, supporting up to 16TB capacity.

Unlike Silicon Motion's 16-channel SM8366, the SM8008's targeted 8-channel design optimizes for 1-16TB boot drives—smaller die area, lower static current, matching data center procurement priorities.

Key Advantage: Gen5 Speed at Gen4 Power
The SM8008 delivers sequential read/write up to 14GB/s (near PCIe Gen5 x4's 15.75GB/s theoretical limit) and over 2.3M 4K random IOPS, while maintaining active power under 5W—eliminating boot drives as thermal headaches.

For hyperscale data centers, this translates to real savings: 100,000 servers using this controller save approximately $274,000 annually in power and cooling costs.

Security & Compliance
The SM8008 features TCG Opal 2.0, AES-256, hardware Secure Boot, DICE device identity, and SPDM protocols. It's CNSA 2.0 ready, meeting 2027 US national security system procurement standards.

Technology & Availability
Proprietary technologies include 8th-gen NANDXtend® LDPC engine for TLC/QLC endurance and NANDCommand™ for optimized scheduling and garbage collection.
